Day 39 Three Rivers to Camp Sack-In, IN

SECTION ROADS AND INDIANA

I had a very pleasant breakfast with Gary. He rolled out the red carpet! I finally got going around 9.

Today was in most ways similar to prior days riding solo. Many long sections of quiet roads, some better than others. I diverted from my planned course several times to avoid dirt roads. My evasive maneuvers were successful most of the times but I did end up on ok dirt roads a few times.

I came around one corner and heard then saw a pit bull coming towards me at full speed. For the first time this trip I drew my pepper spray, pulled the safety, aimed it, and the pit bull stopped at the road edge. I was on the centerline with my bike between us by this time. (I did not realize I could multi-task so quickly!). We had a bit of  a staring contest. I was playing Spotify and just then Louis Armstrong came on singing “It’s a Wonderful World.”. The pit bull seemed to calm down returned to his house, and I rode on. No owners in sight.

Lunch was spent straddling my bike in the shade of a tree talking to Nancy while eating a sandwich and drinking Gatorade.

Riding along I knew I was near the state line and then I noticed a change in the asphalt. Ah ha, change in jurisdictions! I turned around and there was a state line sign for entering Michigan! No sign for entering Indiana.

I pushed on to Fremont, Indiana where I tanked up on more Gatorade, ice cream and food for the campground tonight.

Arrived Canp Sack-In around 4:30.  Wednesday night, quiet campground. I met the family in an adjacent lot, grandparents with two of their granddaughters. After a swim in the campground lake they graciously asked me for dinner, including beer! I accepted. He, Shawn, works for Michigan DOC and was a volunteer EMT.  Rene was a respiratory therapist and held a second job as an EMT. They had some incredible stories of things they have seen, and lives they have saved!

By the numbers:

Elev Gain - 1,811 ft
Elev Loss - 1,762 ft

  1. Yikes!! I was scared just reading about your encounter with the pit bull. So glad that all worked out in your favour. Apart from that encounter ,what amazing friendly experiences you are having with total strangers. Each one a small dose of human goodness. Go Hoosiers! Tim

  4. Ah, yes, Satchmo could calm down a whirling dervish, not to mention a mere pit bull. Enough Gatorade and your eyeballs will turn orange or whatever toxic color you have been drinking. Sounds like a good day overall. I hope the Camp Slacker was bug free. I hope your Thursday has been good, too ... eg
