Day 30. Monticello to Minneapolis

EASY DAY, MISSISSIPPI SWIM

Left Monticello and rode bike trails for much of the day interspersed with roads and bike lanes.

The ride started off passing through agricultural fields and ended at the Univ of Minnesota campus, in Minneapolis.  Crops appeared to be predominately corn with a minor in soybean.

Later in the morning I crossed the Mississippi to have breakfast at the Mad Hatter in Anoka.

Crossing back I took this photo from the bridge, oh for a quiet row in a single scull.  Maybe there is even a straight 2k distance here?

A few more miles and I could not resist, time to get wet. Many kayakers on the quiet Missisip.

While waiting for the sun to dry me off I called my mom to wish her a happy 98th birthday. She is happily in Maine, where I hope to be the 2nd week of August.

At last - Minneapolis. Arrived at the hotel around 3. The hotel “The Graduate” is on the UofM campus, which is quite pretty.  Found a bike store to get tape to rewrap the handle bars with as soft and spongy tape as I could find. I have lost some mobility in my hands from hanging onto the handlebars and the vibration. I hope it is temporary.

I had supper at Blarney’s in Dinkytown, one of the neighborhoods by the University. It is the old stomping ground of Bob Dylan. At the bar I talked to a couple of young women who worked there about the riots last summer and any longer lasting repercussions.  They both thought the neighborhood is much less safe now. Shootings and mugging are now much more common.

By the numbers:
Dist. 48 miles
Elev gain 1,310 ft
Elev loss 1,302 ft
Moving time 4:22
