Day 34 Wisconsin Rapids to Butte Des Morts

HOT, HUMID AND THUNDERSTORMS

We left Wisconsin Rapids early as thunderstorms were predicted for late afternoon. We passed through Lake Wazeecha Park on a very still morning. Nice morning for a row or swim. Unfortunately we passed on both and pressed on.

Soon enough we were on —- you guessed it  —— empty, lonely roads.  Beautiful countryside - corn, soybeans and dairy.

Hot & humid. Like yesterday, and the hot days in central Washington at the beginning of the trip, this was a 5 liter day, combined total of water and Gatorade drunk by me. Vai had a similar intake.

Vai trying to fly like the Sandhills Cranes in the 2nd following picture.

Lunch in the town of Wild Rose and then more empty roads. Note bikes in the background.

Over the course of about 5 miles I noticed several women mowing their front yard while riding John Deere lawn mowers. One of them was a quite attractive, scantily clad, blond. One notices these things after 6 weeks on the road!

We arrived Butte Des Morts at the home of Ann & Gus, sister and brother-in-law of my good friend Nancy Lockett, about 4. Ten minutes after arriving we were swimming in the lake in a huge thunderstorm, rain & squall. We got out before the lightning. Classic Midwest thunderstorm - 1 inch of rain in about 2 hours,  big squall, visibility about 200 feet, intense! We don’t see these kind of storms in Seattle. Link below.

For me, 2 days of R&R. Friday to Manitowoc, Saturday ferry across Lake Michigan.
For Vai, Green Bay tomorrow for flight back to Seattle.

No post until Friday. Stay well.

By the numbers:
Dist - 77.2 miles
Elev Gain - 1,282 ft
Elev Loss - 1,460 ft

  2. Perk. Have you seen any Badgers in Wisconsin? Enjoy your well earned test days. And glad you were off road when the thunder and lightning hit -after living in southern Ontario for 20 years you come to respect those as much as a Gale warning at sea! Safe travels’. Tim

  4. Sounds great. Enjoy the days off. It's nice to stay with friends, too. The countryside and Lake Wazeecha looks beautiful and inviting, as you said. Maybe you should have towed a boat with you. I'm glad you found more peaceful roads and soybeans as well as a place to rest and eat. Wild Rose just sounds like a nice town.

The lady on the John Deere reminds me of seeing so many huge lawns in the midwest. You need a tractor just to keep up.

Watch the lightning. Maybe that's where "Des Morts" gets its name .... have fun. eg

  5. Enjoy your days off Warren, but I am anxious for the daily reports to resume. I start my day with a cup of coffee and the WA blog!
