Day 7 - Clarkston to Orofino

EASIER DAY

We linked up with Hank & Geoff from Pocock Rowing Club last night and had a very pleasant dinner.  We will be traveling with them until Bozeman.  We (Paul & I) left Clarkston around 9, delayed to replace Paul's rear tube/tire as the tube had gone flat overnight.  Geoff & Hank left at 8.

Easy ride through Clarkston and Lewiston and onto a nice bike trail along the Clearwater River.  Eventually the bike trail dumped us onto RT 12, which we were on for the day.  The Clearwater Valley is beautiful but better to be viewed from the shotgun seat of a car than from a bicycle.  The shoulder was small to non-existent for much of the trip today, and I understand does not get any better until near Montana.  We have been told by a few local folk that weekend traffic is much worse than weekday, so our fingers are crossed for tomorrow, Monday.

Generalizing here - After the last few days I have about as much respect for RV drivers as I do the Bayliner motorboat drivers that ply the Seattle waterways.  SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!!!

We are now in Orofino and beginning to get back into the woods.  Less dry, more rain, at least enough for the trees.  View from our hotel.

Arrived Orofino, ID around 2:30.  My forearms are quite tired, I expect from hanging to the handlebars so tightly yesterday in the wind, and today to tow the narrow line as RVs passed.

This will be my last post until Wednesday night or Thursday as we are entering a no cell coverage area and we are hoping to camp out for a night or two, Three Rivers Campground and Powell Campground.  I will post again when we get to Missoula, where we have a rest day before climbing the continental divide.

Stay well my friends!

  1. Tonight it’s pouring rain in Seattle. Hope this storm doesn’t catch up with you. Really appreciate the time you spend keeping all of us up to date on your adventure. Wishing you happy trails.

  2. Hi Warren .... glad you are gettng some easier days with tail wind, but as you experienced, wind has its limits. The RV's seems hazardous, so we are glad you are OK. Almost all of them are really car drivers and don't know what they are doing, as you found out. I hope you find some farm roads that are less used by tourists. The old guy sounds like fun. We met some like him, too. I love the wheat country, too. We went through a lot on our cross state rides. Beautiful fields. Enjoy some slower days. eg

  3. Sorry to hear those RV guys are tough to deal with. But it sounds like you may be over the worst of them with the weekdays ahead. Just head for the white abutment and avoid the Chang Factor! Best to you guys Tim
